Portland: A Great Place to Live & Work

For those of you considering a move to the Northwest, one must ask the question... Why Portland? We're glad you asked!

Here are a few ideas -- and a few links -- to get you started.

Sustainability

Portland is the epicenter of sustainability. Period. And it doesn't matter whether you're talking about green building (Portland currently has more LEED buildings per capita than any other U.S. city), renewable energy, local food & sustainable agriculture or sustainable anything else. Portland is totally obsessed with sustainability.

Getting Around

Getting around in Portland involves walking, riding a bike, riding a scooter, riding the bus or the light rail or the streetcar... or when you need to, driving your car. Portland has a higher percentage of bicycle/transit/car pool commuters than any other city in the U.S.

Picking a Neighborhood

Deciding to live in Portland is only step one... immediately followed by deciding what kind of neighborhood you're looking for. Believe me, there's something for everyone. From urban hip to urban forests to arts cooperatives to family friendly communities – and that's long before you start getting close to the suburbs. Here are a few sites to get you started.

The Great Outdoors

For you rock climbers, there are bouldering gyms all over town to prepare you to pull down some real rock. For you skiers and snowboarders, there's Mt. Hood -- year round. For you hikers, there are thousands of trails in the Cascades and Coast Range. For you kayakers... well, you get the picture. If you love to be in the great outdoors, you'll find what you're looking for.

Thirsty?

Portland boasts more craft breweries than any other city in America. The Willamette Valley produces the best pinot noir outside of France. We've got a serious coffee culture. Tazo and Stash started here. And Portland city water actually tastes good.

Hungry?

There's a restaurant renaissance going on here.
