The Newhouse Building at the capitol campus in Olympia, Washington was originally constructed in 1934 and had deteriorated greatly. The new construction replaces the former building with a modernized, reimagined building that honors the surrounding architectural styles, sustainability aims, ecology, and history.

Special Features

  • Materials like state-sourced timber and salvaged Douglas Fir help decrease carbon emissions and honor the landscape.

  • Natural ventilation and skylights with extensive daylighting help support net-zero readiness.

  • Finishes free of harmful “red list” chemicals for better indoor health.

  • Double-glazed and highly-insulated walls and roofs help keep a consistent temperature inside for lower energy usage and higher occupant comfort.

  • Efficient all electric HVAC systems eliminate the need for fossil fuels and reduce energy demands/cost by up to 45% compared to baseline.
