A resilient, daylight-driven campus designed to enhance student wellbeing, comfort, and connection to nature.
To create a regenerative space for students at Park Side Elementary, PAE designed systems that support the daily experience of students and respond to climate and conserve resources. Early strategies leveraged Sebastopol’s mild conditions to maximize passive cooling and daylight, creating calm, naturally lit classrooms that reduce reliance on mechanical systems and connect students to their environment.
A tight public-school budget challenged the team to rely solely on clerestory daylighting, without skylights. In response, PAE’s Regenerative Design Group didn’t just analyze performance, we translated complex data into clear, actionable recommendations that kept the student experience at the forefront. PAE identified where glare could disrupt learning, where spaces lacked sufficient daylight, and where light distribution felt uneven. PAE then guided the design team toward solutions that support visual comfort, reduce distraction, and create balanced, welcoming classrooms.
Working within strict height limits and safety-driven perimeter constraints, PAE optimized clerestory geometry, glazing performance, and interior reflectivity to rebalance daylight across the campus. By clearly illustrating trade-offs and opportunities, such as higher-reflectant ceilings and strategic shading, PAE helped the team prioritize decisions that improve student comfort and long-term usability.
Another challenge was meeting stringent Title 24 requirements without constraining design flexibility. By adopting a performance-based approach, PAE optimized envelope performance and right-sized glazing, demonstrating how compliance can support healthy, high-quality learning environments rather than limit them.
The result is a resilient, daylight-driven campus that supports student well-being and maintains design integrity despite cost and code constraints. PAE’s process turns complex analysis into clear direction and confident decision-making.
