PAE’s First Solar Equity Grant Project Complete
PAE’s inaugural Solar Equity Grant brings reliable, renewable energy to a community in Bompaso, Ghana.
PAE’s first Solar Equity Grant has reached completion, delivering reliable, renewable energy to a community in Bompaso, Ghana.
Through support from PAE’s Solar Equity Grant, PAE partnered with Twende Solar and PACE Ghana to help close a critical funding gap for a 10 kW off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) system with battery storage. Installed at a newly built community center north of Accra, where PAE has previously worked, the system now serves approximately 600 residents who previously lived without access to electricity.
The community center was designed as a hub for education, healthcare, and economic opportunity. It includes a library, meeting space, medical clinic, and small business hub. Without reliable electricity, these resources could not operate as intended.
Before installation, residents traveled by motorcycle to nearby towns to charge their phones. This limited access to communication, services, and economic activity. Today, the solar system provides a reliable, local source of energy that enables these essential services to operate consistently within the community.
In addition to improving daily life, the system is expected to prevent approximately 280 tons of CO₂ emissions over its lifetime compared to a diesel-powered alternative.
The project also prioritized long-term sustainability. Through a two-week training program led by Twende Solar and PACE Ghana, community members participated directly in the installation and gained hands-on experience maintaining solar and battery systems. This supports long-term system ownership and lays the groundwork for future clean energy projects.
This project marks the first completed installation through PAE’s Solar Equity Grant program and demonstrates how targeted funding and technical partnership can expand access to clean energy in underserved communities.
PAE will continue to support community-led solar projects through future Solar Equity Grant cycles, building on the lessons and impact of this first installation.
