At Benson Polytechnic High School, century-old architecture meets cutting-edge sustainable engineering to support the next generation of STEAM innovators.
This Portland high school renovation balanced preserving hundred-year-old historic buildings with creating modern spaces. The unique high school offers students a chance to tailor their education to STEAM and technical careers and the new space allows them to integrate academics with project-based learning in enhanced classrooms and collaborative spaces.
Special Features
The project required complex coordination around historic building features and the specialized systems needed in the creative technical spaces such as a foundry and metal, wood, and electrical shops.
The team performed air quality testing prior to design to ensure outside ventilation did not include fumes from the nearby major highway. The exhaust grills and intakes are all situated in ideal locations to ensure indoor air remains healthy and of high quality.
The building uses chilled beams and heat recovery ventilators for highly efficient heating and cooling.
